What is a Tree Survey?

tree survey is an important survey that is performed on private or public landscapes. The aim of the survey is to provide useful information about the trees situated on the land so that property managers or homeowners can make informed decisions about how to manage them.

A tree survey should be conducted by a competent and professionally trained arborist working to the British Standard BS5837. The subsequent report contains lots of detailed information about the trees to provide a useful guide that can help everyone make better decisions regarding retention and removal. All trees are tagged and numbered which can be cross-referenced with an explanatory summary table and only after a tree survey is conducted should actual work start on a piece of land.

The survey will reveal information such as:

  • Species of the tree based on scientific name.
  • Physical measurements of the tree such as height and diameter.
  • Age of the tree.
  • Overall health of the tree.
  • Life expectancy.
  • Management recommendations.

In some regions, a tree survey is mandatory, and this is to prevent a protected tree from being cut down accidentally (based on the Wildlife and Countryside Act). However, the most important reason for conducting tree surveys is for the intention to build upon land where trees are situated.

The information retrieved from a tree survey can be useful to many people, for example, a landscape designer can produce much more realistic digital designs based on the accuracy of the information collected during the survey.

In addition, a tree survey can also point out certain hazards, for example, a tree that has the potential to fall any moment (especially when there is a strong wind or adverse weather) due to fungal decay. The safe recommendation in this instance would be to have the tree professionally removed.

In general, a comprehensive tree survey will give you a good sense of what is on a particular piece of land and will enable sound decisions to be made in the best interests of all parties, including the relevant authorities.
